چکیده

An attempt was made to apply Mn-impregnated acrylic fiber to the collection of small amounts of Ra isotopes in natural waters. The Mn compound incorporated in this material was estimated to be KMn8O16•E H2O, which occurred naturally in Japan as cryptomelane. Collection by the Mn-impregnated acrylic fiber was effective in the pH region higher than 4 and the collecting efficiency was dependent on the temperature of water. Radium concentrations observed at the upper stream of Tamagawa River tended to increase after rainfalls. The observed rises in Ra concentrations suggested that the rainfalls forced the stored water in the subsurface layer of the ground to discharge into the river water system.

Measurement of 224Ra and 225Ra activities in natural waters using a radon-in-air monitor.

We report a simple new technique for measuring low-level radium isotopes (224Ra and 226Ra) in natural waters. The radium present in natural waters is first preconcentrated onto MnO2-coated acrylic fiber (Mn fiber) in a column mode. The radon produced from the adsorbed radium is then circulated through a closed air-loop connected to a commercial radon-in-air monitor. The monitor counts alpha dec...

Application of zeolites for radium removal from mine water

For removal of radium from saline waters in Upper Silesian mines, several methods of purification have been developed. The most efficient one is based on application of barium chloride, which was implemented in full technical scale in two Polish coal mines several years ago. Very good results of purification have been achieved-the removal efficiency exceeding 95% of the initial activity. Anothe...

Radium Isotopes as a Tool for the Study of Water Mixing in the Paraíba do Sul River Estuary

Four isotopes of radium with different half-lives exist in nature. In aquatic systems, radium isotopes present distinct characteristics in salt water and fresh water environments. In fresh waters, radium appears adsorbed to particulate material while in sea water radium presents a conservative behavior, being the concentration of different isotopes of radium governed by the processes of dilutio...

Radium balance in discharge waters from coal mines in Poland the ecological impact of underground water treatment

Saline waters from underground coal mines in Poland often contain natural radioactive isotopes, mainly 226Ra from the uranium decay series and 228Ra from the thorium series. More than 70% of the total amount of radium remains underground as radioactive deposits due to spontaneous co-precipitation or water treatment technologies, but several tens of MBq of 226Ra and even higher activity of 228Ra...

Ra from sand filter samples using MnO2 impregnated resin and determination by sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

An analytical procedure was proposed for the determination of 226 Ra at ultratrace levels in sand filters using sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Radium was preconcentrated using an impregnated manganese dioxide filter and separated from strontium using Eichrom“Sr-resin.” Following the extraction chromatography, polyatomic ions of Pb and W were eliminated by op...
